Simultaneously, it was announced that a 26-year-old white Briton has been arrested on suspicion of murder, writes BBC.

The motives for the crime are currently unknown. Police only state that they are not considering this murder as a terrorist act.

Ann Widdecombe was 78 years old. She was a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party from 1987 to 2010 and served in John Major's government in the first half of the 1990s.

Widdecombe was a well-known opponent of Britain's membership in the European Union. In 2019, she was elected to the European Parliament on the Brexit Party list, and in 2023 she joined the same party, which was renamed Reform UK. After this, she repeatedly made public statements on behalf of the party on issues of immigration and justice.
