According to information from Barents Observer, in late August, Russian military personnel began transferring special aircraft and equipment to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. It is there, at the Pankovo training ground, that facilities designed for testing the "Burevestnik" — a nuclear-powered missile, writes The Moscow Times.
On August 22-23, two Il-967 SKIPP aircraft, used for control and telemetry acquisition during missile launches, arrived at Rogachevo airfield on Novaya Zemlya. An A-50U radar reconnaissance aircraft and several transport aircraft with helicopters were also transferred there.
Simultaneously, vessels began moving in the Barents and Kara Seas, which could be used during the tests. Russia also closed the airspace near Novaya Zemlya for flights.
The "Burevestnik" is a nuclear-powered cruise missile, which Vladimir Putin first unveiled in 2018 as one of Russia's new strategic developments. In the West, it is called the "flying Chernobyl," as the missile is supposed to use a nuclear power plant and could potentially create a radiation hazard during flight or in case of an accident.
Previous tests of the missile encountered problems. According to American intelligence estimates, by 2018, Russia had conducted 13 attempts that ended unsuccessfully. In 2019, the missile fell into the Barents Sea, and an explosion occurred during the operation to recover it. Seven people died, including specialists from the Russian nuclear center in Sarov. After the accident, an increase in background radiation was recorded in the region.
Russia had previously claimed allegedly successful tests of the "Burevestnik". In 2025, Vladimir Putin claimed that the missile successfully flew about 14 thousand kilometers in 15 hours. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not publish a video of the launch itself. In May 2026, Putin stated that the missile's development was in its final stages.
The current movement of aircraft, vessels, and the closure of airspace near Novaya Zemlya may indicate preparations for another stage of tests.
