On August 22, writer Ignacy Karpowicz passed away at the age of just 50. He was born and lived in Poland, wrote his works in Polish, but had Belarusian origins. His maternal uncle is the famous Belarusian artist from Białystok region, Liavon Tarasevich.
Ignacy Karpowicz was born in 1976 in Białystok. He spent the first years of his life in the village of Słuczanka, 15 kilometers from the Belarusian border, and then moved with his parents to Białystok.
After entering the University of Warsaw, he studied Spanish language and culture, as well as African studies. He debuted in literature in 2006 with the novel "Niehalo" ("Not Okay"). Later, his books "Cud" (Miracle), "Życie" (Life - *correction, original says "Жэсты" which means "Gestures"*), "Balladyny i romanse" (Balladynas and Romances), "Kości" (Bones), and "Sońka" were published.
He gained the most recognition for his novel "Balladyny i romanse," for which he received the Politika magazine award in 2011. Several of his other works were also finalists for the prestigious Polish literary prize "Nike."
The novel "Sońka" holds a special place in Karpowicz's work. It was translated into Belarusian by Mariya Martysevich and published in 2018 by the "Logvinau" publishing house.
In addition to his own literary work, Karpowicz was involved in translating fiction from English, Spanish, and Amharic.
