After Siarhei Tsikhanouski's statement that Nasha Niva's publication about Dzmitry Papou allegedly influenced the harsh sentence for the Russian — 16 years in a penal colony — blogger Siarhei Piatrukhin decided to conduct his own investigation. The results were unexpected.
On September 1, Siarhei Piatrukhin uploaded a short video on his YouTube channel, in which, according to his own announcement, he tried to find out "where Nasha Niva got the information that Papou was the moderator of the "Country for Life" social networks."
Starting to restore the chronology, Piatrukhin realized that he himself was the first to call Papou the moderator of the "Country for Life" social networks. This happened a month before the information was published on Nasha Niva's website.
"I made a video about Dzmitry Papou, which I released on June 4, 2020, and even then I called him the moderator of the "Country for Life" social networks," the blogger stated, and tried to recall how that video appeared.
"[Aliaksandr] Kabanau called me from the hospital, where he was then lying, ill with COVID, and sent me a video where Papou is walking through the Mazyr forest, having escaped from the police. He told me who it was, because I didn't know [Papou]. And he said that a video needed to be made and uploaded online."
But Piatrukhin now does not remember if Kabanau specifically reported that Papou was the moderator of the social networks.
"I do not rule out that I could have found this information myself in the now-destroyed Telegram chats," he admits.
Piatrukhin noted that Nasha Niva called Papou the "social network moderator" on July 8, 10, and 13, 2020. At the same time, in several materials, the editorial office referred to human rights activists and "Viasna". According to the blogger, such information first appeared on "Viasna" on the same day his video was released.
Piatrukhin does not rule out that "Viasna" could have picked up the wording from his video:
"At that time, 'Viasna' often reposted my — well, our with Kabanau — materials. But this also needs to be checked against the publication times."
At the same time, Piatrukhin still has claims against Nasha Niva and wants to understand why the editorial office did not double-check the information after him.
It should be noted that the label "social network moderator" affects nothing, if Papou was still forced to testify about his work with Tsikhanouski's team.
