"We were waiting for you." How Venezuelans met Maria Machado VIDEO
The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, who returned to her homeland after ten months abroad, was met by tens of thousands of people. Due to the crowds of supporters, the journey to Caracas took eight hours.
Already on the afternoon of October 25, people began to gather on the highway at the entrance to the capital. They waited for more than four hours: they sang, danced, and raised flags. Venezuelan flags were hung on bridges, and on the walls appeared: "Welcome to your land," writes Efecto Cocuyo.
Around 9:40 PM, it became known that the motorcade was already close. People ran into the middle of the highway. Soon, a black SUV appeared, and Machado emerged from the sunroof.
"We were waiting for you, so that Venezuela could reclaim its freedom!" — people shouted from the crowd.
People occupied all four lanes. Elderly people, teenagers, women, and men held phones above their heads. Some were broadcasting live, although the connection periodically disappeared.
Machado shook hands, embracing supporters.
For many, the politician's return came as a surprise. One woman told journalists that she was cooking lunch when she heard the news on the radio. At first, she thought it was a joke, then she dropped her dishes and started checking her phone.
"It was a strange feeling — with fear, with hope. I felt happy," — she said.
After the disputed 2024 elections, Machado had been in hiding in Venezuela for over a year. At the end of 2025, she secretly left to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Several of her attempts to return until now had been unsuccessful.
Now, among the welcoming cheers, there was also a demand for new elections.
