According to the minister, the tax exemption for electric vehicles, which was in effect considering the environmental friendliness of this type of transport, ended in 2026. Therefore, in 2027, owners of these cars will receive notifications regarding the necessity of paying transport tax.

Kiiko explained that the transport tax is intended to finance road construction and repair costs. According to him, it is now time to equalize the obligations of all car owners in financing these state expenditures. If in the future there is a need to address environmental issues, the tax system can be adapted to take into account relevant priorities.

In 2026, the transport tax in Belarus was included in the unified property payment along with real estate and land taxes. Its amount is calculated depending on the weight of the vehicle. Starting from the same year, electric vehicles, equipped exclusively with an electric motor, became subject to taxation.

According to the Belarusian Association for the Development of Electric Transport, since the beginning of 2026, the number of registered electric vehicles and hybrids in the country has increased by 44.4% and reached 73,663 by October 1.

Of these, about 50 thousand, or 68%, were electric vehicles, and another 23.6 thousand, or 32%, were hybrids. According to forecasts, by the end of 2026, the number of electric vehicles in Belarus could reach 75 thousand.
