80% of the world's rare earth element reserves are found in six countries
Rare earth elements (REEs) are key to modern technologies. They are used in many areas, from electric motors and wind turbines to smartphones and navigation systems. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, in 2025 their global reserves are distributed very unevenly, writes Thinktanks.pro.

China is the absolute leader in rare earth element reserves. They are estimated at 44 million tons — almost half of the world's volume (48%).
In second place is Brazil with 21 million tons (23%), followed by India (6.9 million tons), Australia (5.7 million tons), Russia (3.8 million tons) and Vietnam (3.5 million tons).
These 6 countries account for about 80% of all known reserves.
US reserves are estimated at only 1.9 million tons (2% of the world's volume), which makes the country dependent on imports of this raw material. US authorities are actively supporting the development of mining and are looking for partners to diversify supplies.
New players are now emerging in Africa: Tanzania (0.89 million tons) and South Africa (0.86 million tons) could become important sources if infrastructure and processing are developed.
