Sergei took money for the contract and was going to surrender at the first opportunity. The winding fate of a Belarusian who went to fight for Russia
Minsk native, former football fan Sergei Hryshachou spent almost 16 years behind bars. After another murder in St. Petersburg, he had a choice: sit in a Russian prison or go to war in Ukraine. He chose the latter, but had a cunning plan to save his life.

The biography of 38-year-old Sergei Hryshachou is a typical path of a recidivist. He was imprisoned several times in Belarus: for murder, theft, and robbery. In between sentences, he worked various simple jobs in Minsk. Later, he went to Russia for work. He says that since childhood, since 1999, he was a football hooligan, a fan of Minsk "Dynamo". A video featuring Hryshachou was released on the Ukrainian English-language YouTube channel United24.
The last time he ended up in a pre-trial detention center was after he stabbed one of the men who came to confront him while he was working as a security guard in St. Petersburg. For this, he faced up to fifteen years in a penal colony.

The Belarusian decided to enlist for the war to avoid prison. On December 6, 2025, he signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of Russia, and a few days later, he was released.
However, according to Hryshachou himself, he had no intention of fighting for Russian interests. After receiving the money, which he transferred to his family, Sergei intended to surrender at the first opportunity.
The reality of the Russian army confused him. Sergei says he encountered "zombie squads" of drug addicts and 60-year-old mobilized men, whom he could only "hug and cry" for. He calls the army resembling some partisan detachment, not a professional military force.

After being transferred to the 79th regiment, he was sent to storm the village of Zelenaya along with a group of convicts and scouts. Conditions were difficult: commanders lived in mud, assault troops were sent on attacks with no hope of evacuation, and plantations were literally covered with the bodies of Russian soldiers. According to him, "evacuation groups" only took the wallets and phones of the deceased, leaving the bodies behind.
During another mission, Sergei's group came under heavy attack from Ukrainian drones. When the commanders from his group began to die and scatter, the Belarusian realized that his chance had come. Together with a shell-shocked warrant officer, he separated from the remnants of the detachment and went to surrender, raising his hands and showing his radio to a Ukrainian drone.
Upon seeing the drone, he "hailed in his old habit" — this way Sergei hinted to the viewers about his neo-Nazi views. He says he hailed out of stress.

Despite his criminal past and participation in the war on Russia's side, Sergei is subscribed to various Belarusian communities on social networks. On VKontakte, he wrote: "It is precisely the white-red-white flag that is the historical and true flag of Belarusians." He calls the official red-green flag "sunset over the swamp" and says it "resembles the flag of Madagascar more than the flag of the Belarusian people."

According to him, conditions in Ukrainian captivity are better than in the Russian army. He says he believes that Ukrainians are fighting for survival, and if they lose this war, they will simply cease to exist as a nation; neither Ukrainian culture nor Ukrainian language will remain.
Addressing Russian soldiers and fellow convicts who are thrown into "meat assaults," the former convict gives pragmatic advice: kill commanders and approach Ukrainians with raised hands to save your life.
