Handball player Sergei Rutenka headed the Belarusian Basketball Federation
Former handball player Sergei Rutenka replaced Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov as chairman of the Belarusian Basketball Federation.

Rutenka previously headed the Belarusian Tennis Federation, which was then led by Aliaksandr Zakharchenko, who was deputy chairman of the BATE board during Anatol Kapski's time.
Lukashenka commented on the replacement of Maksim Ryzhenkov as head of the BBF already last spring.
«Let him deal with the ministry. And we need to find a strong person there who will deliver results,» — Lukashenka said a year ago.
According to him, Ryzhenkov already has many tasks, and there are problems in basketball.
Belarusian basketball is currently in a deep coma. Firstly, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Belarusian basketball is under an international ban. Belarusian clubs are suspended from Eurocups and tournaments involving national teams.
Secondly, the performance of Minsk «Tsmoki» in the VTB United League (effectively the Open Championship of Russia) was very weak; the team prematurely took the last place several times and has not played in it in recent years.
