On March 13, in the Nesvizh district, biologist Siarhei Shakala observed a colony of speckled ground squirrels for several hours. And not in vain — one ground squirrel appeared on the surface, writes the Telegram channel "Wild Nature Nearby".

The animal came out into the sun for 15 seconds and then hid back in its burrow.
Each ground squirrel has a separate burrow. For winter, the entrance to it is packed with earth. In spring, they dig out a new exit from the nest.
The speckled ground squirrel is included in the Red Book of Belarus. The last three colonies of ground squirrels remaining in Belarus are protected by the state, interested organizations, and enthusiasts.
