According to data from the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, only 158 such attempts were recorded in the first quarter of 2026. For comparison, in the same period of 2022, when the migrant crisis at the border peaked, there were more than 3300.

Polish authorities attribute this sharp decrease to a number of measures. Among them are increased border security, additional investments in this matter, and the temporary suspension of the right to apply for asylum for migrants.
A month ago, on March 5, Poland extended the so-called buffer zone on the border with Belarus for another three months. This zone was introduced on June 13, 2024. It covers a border section approximately 60 kilometers long and extends into Polish territory from 200 meters to 2 kilometers. Entry into this area is prohibited without permission from border guards.
A high fence with surveillance systems has been erected on the Polish-Belarusian border to deter the flow of illegal migrants. These measures began to be implemented after the 2021 migration crisis, when attempts to enter EU countries through Belarus started en masse.
