In Novogrudok, the monastery of the Novogrudok martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for local residents, is being destroyed
In Novogrudok, a radical reconstruction is underway of the wooden convent of the Sisters of Nazareth, from which in 1943 eleven sisters went to be shot to save local residents. Part of the monastery has already been demolished, and the siding and windows have been removed from another.

As reported by the Telegram channel "Spadchyna", the large-scale reconstruction of the monastery at 26 May 1st Street, built of wood in 1933, does not have a passport, so it is precisely unknown what is happening with the object and who is behind it.
Workers have already dismantled the original wooden siding, old windows and doors, are disassembling the roof, and have completely demolished the western wing of the building.

The value of this place is measured primarily not by its architectural merits, but by its connection to historical events. In the summer of 1943, Novogrudok came under the brutal punitive operation "Hermann". On the night of July 18, the Gestapo arrested about 120 local residents and Father Alexander Ziankevich with the aim of their further execution. Maria Stella (Adela Mardasevich) and ten other Sisters of Nazareth, who lived in the convent, offered their own lives to the occupying authorities in exchange for the arrested. The Germans agreed: the townspeople were sent to forced labor in the Reich, thanks to which they all survived the war.

Eleven nuns were shot on August 1, 1943, in Batarouski Forest. In 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified them, and the Sisters of Nazareth themselves became one of the main symbols of spiritual resistance to Nazism in Belarus.
Despite its immense significance, the Nazareth convent still does not have official monument status. However, the paradox of this radical reconstruction is that today the building on May 1st Street is owned by the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family, which has established its center there.
