The country's government plans to tighten the rules for obtaining Polish citizenship.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that citizenship should be "a privilege that must be earned," writes the Telegram channel "Belarusians in Poland".
Among the proposed changes:
— a mandatory citizenship exam — a test of approximately 40 questions on the knowledge of Polish history, values, and laws, as well as the level of integration into society.
— signing an act of loyalty to the Polish state,
— high proficiency in the Polish language — no lower than B2,
— a minimum of 8 years of residence in Poland,
— having Polish tax residency.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs explains that the goal of the reform is to raise the status of Polish citizenship and establish clear requirements for those who have fully integrated into Polish society.
Amidst the discussions, political disputes continue. Earlier, Polish President Nawrocki proposed his own project, according to which the minimum period of continuous residence for obtaining citizenship should be increased from 3 to 10 years.
At the end of April 2026, the opposition party "Law and Justice" submitted a bill for consideration that provides for a radical tightening of the rules for obtaining citizenship for foreigners.
It proposes "zero tolerance" for hooliganism and public order violations by foreigners. For a repeated similar violation, it is proposed to automatically deport the offender.
The opposition wants to introduce the following conditions for foreigners to obtain citizenship:
— increased minimum period of settlement for naturalization — 10 years instead of the current three;
— increased period for individuals married to a Polish citizen — six years instead of three;
— increased period of continuous residence for individuals with Polish roots and a Pole's Card — five years instead of one year;
— mandatory knowledge of the Polish language at C1 level instead of intermediate B1;
— passing a special state exam on knowledge of Polish culture and history.
