The first contemporary art sales of the season have concluded in Hong Kong. As usual, several works by Marc Chagall were presented. One of his paintings, «Peasants», was sold for over $6.3 million, writes Office Life.

Marc Chagall painted «Peasants» in 1971 when he lived in the commune of Saint-Paul-de-Vence in southeastern France with his second wife, Valentina Brodsky. The painting depicts images characteristic of the artist's work, with two lovers at its center. Unlike many of Chagall's other works, they are not embracing here. Perhaps, as suggested in the article, the artist was conveying his nostalgia for home and childhood.
At Sotheby's evening sale of modern and contemporary art on September 28, the painting was sold for over $6.3 million, with an estimated value exceeding $4 million. The previous owner acquired it in 2018 at a Christie's auction for $1.93 million. Thus, in eight years, the painting's value more than tripled.
Another work by Chagall, «Gladioli», created in 1950, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong auction for $358,800. Its estimated value was $570,000.

Chagall's third painting was sold at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong. The circus-themed work went under the hammer for $815,000, which exceeded its estimated value by $115,000.
