New changes are being prepared in Belarus in the legislation regulating the issues of keeping and responsible treatment of pets. One of the proposed innovations concerns the registration of pets, writes Tochka.by.
It is planned to keep dog registration mandatory, but make it voluntary for cats. The owner will be able to decide whether to register their cat.
This was announced by Nadezhda Sevrjuk, Deputy Head of the Housing Department of the Ministry of Housing and Communal Services, during a press conference at the Press House.
According to current rules, dogs and cats must be registered at the age of about three to three and a half months. If an animal is acquired at the age of more than three months, the owner must register it within three days.
After the proposed changes are implemented, this obligation will remain only for dog owners.
The authorities are also considering other changes to the rules for keeping pets. It is proposed to abandon the limit on the number of pets in apartments. Currently, no more than two animals are allowed in a residential premises. There is no such restriction for blocked and single-apartment residential buildings.
In addition, interest in pet insurance is currently growing in Belarus. It is already among the top three most popular types of insurance among Belarusians.
After the rules were changed in 2022, insurance can be taken out for almost any pet. This does not require a pedigree or documents confirming its value. Insurance can, for example, compensate for veterinary care costs, including treatment after a tick bite or an urgent visit to the veterinarian.
