The drug is still experimental and does not have sales approval.
Veradermics published the research results on October 19. The study involved 536 men with mild to moderate male-pattern baldness. They were randomly divided into three groups: two received the drug with different dosing frequencies, and the third received a placebo. The results were compared after six months.
According to the company, in the groups that received the drug, the number of hairs in the skin area where growth was assessed increased by an average of approximately 29-36 per square centimeter. In the placebo group, it increased by approximately seven.
The drug has the working name VDPHL01. Its basis is minoxidil, which is already used against hair loss, including in topical scalp treatments.
A feature of Veradermics' development is the gradual release of minoxidil from the tablet. The company expects this to make its action more uniform.
According to the developer, no serious side effects related to the treatment were recorded in the new trial over six months. However, side effects were present: the published table mentions edema (swelling) and excessive hair growth on the body or face. Therefore, it cannot be claimed that the drug has no undesirable effects at all.
It is also important what the result was compared with. In this study, the control group received a placebo, not regular minoxidil. Therefore, it does not yet provide an answer as to whether the new form is better than existing drugs.
This is the third, late phase of clinical trials, the results of which are used when considering sales approval. VDPHL01 does not yet have such approval. By the end of the year, the company plans to present longer-term observations of participants from another study — after a year of treatment.
