The temporary cessation of fire is connected with the conduct of a humanitarian operation in this area.
Russian and Ukrainian servicemen agreed to cease fire so that humanitarian convoys with aid could enter the city, which is effectively on the front line, and those who wish to leave Oleshky could do so safely.
The agreement on the 'silence regime' was reached last week with the mediation of US President's wife Melania Trump and Pope Leo XVI, who requested this during personal phone conversations with Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.
Oleshky, occupied by Russian troops, is located on the left bank of the Dnieper, opposite Kherson, which is controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and located on the right bank. Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of shelling the city and declare a humanitarian catastrophe. Delivering food to its residents is very difficult, writes the BBC.
According to volunteers, as of autumn 2026, about one and a half thousand people remain in Oleshky, including approximately 40 children. If neighboring villages are taken into account, the number of residents is about six thousand people, among whom are approximately 200 children.
