Former Head of "Ukrenergo" Died from Electric Shock. He was Setting up the System After Russian Strikes

Oleksii Brekht was 47 years old.

The talented engineer died on January 21 in the Kyiv region while overseeing the restoration of one of the facilities after Russian strikes. He was electrocuted, writes BBC — Ukraine.

Oleksii Brekht managed the restoration of the power grid after hundreds of strikes, creating creative technical solutions that resurrected switches, transformers, and even entire substations from the ashes. This is how Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the former head of "Ukrenergo," remembers his friend and colleague.

In 2024–2025, Oleksii Brekht headed "Ukrenergo," and after that, he was responsible for the operation and restoration of the grid.

"The fact that Oleksii passed away while personally overseeing repair work at critical energy infrastructure facilities is a tragic, yet very eloquent testament to the kind of person he was. He sincerely believed that leadership is about personal presence where it matters most," the Supervisory Board of "Ukrenergo" stated.

"His contribution to the stability of Ukraine's unified energy system is hard to overestimate," added the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

"It was under his leadership that "Ukrenergo" brigades learned to replace main transformers 4-6 times faster than European energy system operators, to work under 750,000 volts of voltage; it was under his leadership that shelters for transformers and underground control points were developed," noted Volodymyr Kudrytskyi.

He called Brekht "the brain of "Ukrenergo," the essence of that engineering creativity thanks to which Ukrainian power engineers are admired by the whole world."

He recalled that "Ukrenergo" received two Edison Electric Institute awards, which are the energy equivalent of an "Oscar" in cinematography.

Andriy Kobolyev, former head of "Naftogaz," spoke about Oleksii Brekht as a man "who could make the impossible possible" and helped "find solutions in extremely difficult situations."

"A good comrade, an excellent manager, and a fantastic engineer has died. A significant part of the engineering solutions that still allow Ukraine's energy system to hold up under Russian attacks was created by Oleksii Brekht or with his direct participation," said Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center.
