Fundraising Announced in Support of Prominent Belarusian Researcher Yuras Yurkevich, Diagnosed with a Severe Illness
Yuras, a Belarusian born in Estonia, dedicated all his energy to working for the benefit of Belarus. In late 2025, Yuras was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The diagnosis turned out to be very severe — malignant glioblastoma. The Belarusian Council for Culture has opened a separate account to help Yuras.

Yuras himself shared about his illness on Facebook.
“On November 25, 2025, after a neurological consultation and an emergency MRI, I was hospitalized at the MSWiA Neurosurgery Clinic in Warsaw with a diagnosis of ‘tumor of the left frontal lobe with radiological signs of highly differentiated glioma’.”
On December 12, 2025, I underwent neurosurgical resection, which lasted nine hours. After the operation, I developed severe motor aphasia, accompanied by agraphia and alexia.
On December 22, 2025, I was discharged with persistent and significant speech impairments. For approximately two weeks, I could not utter even basic syllables, and by December 24, I could pronounce no more than ten phrases in my native language. The medical documentation recommended urgent oncological and neuro-oncological consultations, as well as continued neurological and speech rehabilitation.
On January 10, 2026, my condition significantly worsened. It was determined that a bacterial infection had occurred during the first operation, and on January 12, 2026, I underwent a second operation to remove contaminated tissues, including soft tissues, as well as parts of the cranial bone.
Now, radiological treatment and chemotherapy have begun, which will continue approximately until September 2026,” wrote Yuras.
The Belarusian Council for Culture clarifies that at least six courses of chemo— and radiotherapy are ahead. This requires great physical strength, but also significant financial expenses. The entire financial burden lies with the family, whose income is disproportionate to the costs of treatment and rehabilitation.
Therefore, the Council appeals for support. Every contribution matters and will help Yuras focus on fighting for his life and recovery.
The fundraising goal is 15,000 euros. This money will go towards specialist consultations, rehabilitation (physiotherapist and neuro-speech therapist), medications accompanying the main treatment, and those needed for recovery during and between complex courses of chemo— and radiotherapy.
For these needs, the Belarusian Council for Culture has opened a separate account. All funds received will be directly transferred to Yuras's family.
