Latvian Saeima supports new restrictions on import of goods from Belarus and Russia
On July 23, the Latvian Saeima adopted amendments to the law on supporting the peaceful population of Ukraine in the final reading, which provide for the expansion of national restrictions on the import of goods of Belarusian and Russian origin, reported the press service of the Latvian parliament.
According to the new rules, the import of a number of industrial goods manufactured in Russia or Belarus will be prohibited in Latvia. These include books, newspapers, video games, sports goods, toys, clothing, and footwear.
The restrictions will also apply if these goods are imported through other countries, but their country of origin is Russia or Belarus. The exact list of products subject to the ban will be determined later by the Latvian government.
Raimonds Bergmanis, Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for Defence, Internal Affairs, and Anti-Corruption, stated that the adopted amendments are aimed at further reducing economic ties with Russia and Belarus while maintaining support for Ukraine.
The new norms also apply to individual categories of goods which, according to Latvian authorities, can be used to spread propaganda and disinformation.
In addition, the government will be obliged to assess the impact of import restrictions on state security and public interests by March 1 of each year, and to submit a corresponding report to the Saeima.
The law will come into force the day after its official promulgation. It is stipulated that the import ban established by it will be valid until July 1, 2027.
