Dolly Parton, one of the most famous performers in country music history, has died at the age of 80. Her family announced her death on August 25. The singer passed away peacefully in Nashville, with the cause of death yet to be disclosed.
In mid-August, Parton spoke about her deteriorating health and canceled a planned visit to her Dollywood theme park. She had also previously postponed performances in Las Vegas.
Dolly Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee into a large family. She began her musical career in childhood and started performing professionally in the 1950s. Over almost six decades of her career, Parton released dozens of albums and wrote more than 3,000 songs. Among her most famous compositions are Jolene, I Will Always Love You, 9 to 5, and Coat of Many Colors. She sold over 100 million records and became one of the most influential women in country music history.
Parton received 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Country Music and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame. She also ventured into film and television, earning nominations for Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys.
