The exclusive electric supercar Ferrari Luce "Chassis 0" was sold at the RM Sotheby's auction during Monterey Car Week in Monterey, California, for a record $40 million, reports the BBC.
The initial price of the car was about $1.1 million, but as a result of the lot, it was exceeded approximately 36 times. All proceeds from the sale, through the Ferrari Foundation, will be directed to charitable causes. Specifically, the money will go towards the development of technical education projects in Italy and the USA.
The buyer was American inventor, entrepreneur, and billionaire Herbert "Herbie" Wertheim. This is not the first unique Ferrari in his collection. Last year, he acquired a Ferrari Daytona SP3 Tailor Made for $26 million. The money from that sale was also donated to charity.
The Ferrari Luce is the latest model from the Italian brand, set to mark the beginning of a new era for the company in electric vehicles. The supercar's electric powertrain develops 1050 horsepower.
The car with chassis number "0" was specially prepared for the charity auction. It received a unique matte body paint and an exclusive interior with metallic leather trim.
