Former commander of the main staff of the Bosnian Serb army, Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide, has died, writes the BBC.

84-year-old Mladić was serving a life sentence and had previously filed a petition for early release, citing deteriorating health.

Mladić spent two years in a prison hospital and was bedridden.

The former commander of the main staff of the Army of Republika Srpska was arrested on May 26, 2011, in Serbia and extradited by the authorities to The Hague.

On November 22, 2017, the Hague Tribunal sentenced him to life imprisonment on charges of war crimes during the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992-1995.
