In Brest, a fisherman gained access to a lake, but afterwards, residents were issued 20 citations

In the Hiershony microdistrict in Brest, a conflict arose over access to a local lake. Fisherman Dzmitry published a video on TikTok showing a barbed wire fence that prevented access to the water. The video garnered over 325 thousand views and attracted the attention of communal services, writes Domovita.by.

After this, a commission arrived at the scene and issued about 20 citations to residents. The authorities explained that lands under water bodies are state-owned, and therefore access to them must be free. Piers, footbridges, and fences built without proper permits were recognized as unauthorized constructions.

Residents have already voluntarily dismantled eight piers. Another pier on Chernigovskaya Street must be demolished by September 15. It also cannot be legalized because it is located in a water protection zone.

However, some local residents consider this decision unfair. They claim that for years they used their own money to clear trash, mow grass, clean the reservoir, and build safe footbridges that even neighborhood children used. Some also have boats and catamarans, which require safe access to the water.

According to the authorities, about 90% of the issued citations have now been complied with. As a result, access to the lake for fishermen has been restored, but residents who previously maintained the shore themselves are trying to find legal ways to preserve at least some of their structures.
