Ukrainian military personnel reported the successful evacuation of a wounded infantryman by a heavy bomber drone. Ground evacuation was impossible due to mines and the activity of Russian drones. The operation became the first front-line evacuation by an aerial drone.
The wounded soldier of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade remained in a position from which he could not be evacuated even by a ground robot. Then, specialists from the unmanned ground systems company of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade proposed to retrieve the soldier by air.
For this purpose, a heavy hexacopter – a drone with six rotors – from the Ukrainian company Gurzuf Defence was used. The manufacturer provided the device for the operation and helped adapt it for transporting a person.
HISTORIC FIRST: Ukrainian forces completed the first-ever aerial evacuation of an injured soldier from the frontline using a drone.
Soldiers from the 92nd Assault Brigade and 30th Mechanized Brigade used a heavy Gurzuf Defence hexacopter to rescue the wounded infantryman from a heavily mined area.
According to the mission participants, the main technical challenge was to ensure the drone's stability: it had to carry the wounded person without overturning or excessive swaying. Before the evacuation, specialists, together with the manufacturer, conducted tests and coordinated the plan with other units.
During the operation itself, the drone was controlled by an operator from the 30th Mechanized Brigade. The wounded person was successfully evacuated and transferred for treatment. Regarding his condition, the military reported: "He is now undergoing treatment and rehabilitation; his life is no longer in danger."
The operation participants note that this method can expand the possibilities for rescuing the wounded where ground routes are blocked by mines and enemy drones.
