Former Kupala Theater Actress Recalled How Commission Disliked White and Red Scarves on Women on Stage
"Take this off, swap places."

Actress Valiantsina Hartsuyeva, former prima of the Kupala Theater, who left in 2020, recalled in an interview with "Radio Svaboda" how an ideological commission used to come to the theater before every premiere.
"We didn't do anything like that there. They simply removed, forbade, crossed out parts of scenes that seemed suspicious to them for some reason. There were three women standing: one in a white scarf, another in a red one, and the third in a white one. It occurred to no one that they would see BChB (the white-red-white flag symbol) in this! 'Take this off, swap places'."
"'It was very difficult to go against the wind,' she says about such moments of censorship."
Valiantsina now lives in two countries — Germany and Poland. Her husband, actor Jean-Marc Birkholz, is from Germany. She explains why she isn't permanently moving to him: she can only work in her profession in Poland. Valiantsina performs with the creative group "Kupalaŭcy".
"'I don't yet see what I would do there as an actress in Germany,' Hartsuyeva shares."
