Wounded Police Officers in Krakow Rescued by Two Renowned Surgeons: They Were Dining Nearby and Rushed to Help
Two police officers who stopped a shooter in Krakow were aided by a fortunate coincidence, thanks to which they received the best possible first aid. According to Fakt, two experienced surgeons were dining at a nearby restaurant at that time. One of them later operated on the injured officer. Poles are now being urged to donate blood for police officer Jakub Kulik.
Jakub Kulik and Artur Marański sustained severe injuries when stopping an attacker in Krakow on November 7. One of them, already wounded, used his last strength to open fire on the shooter. Afterwards, kneeling, he held him at gunpoint until he himself fell to the ground.
Police spokesperson Katarzyna Ciesla confirmed to Fakt that both police officers were very seriously injured. One was taken to the hospital in a life-threatening condition.
But they received help already on the street. Two well-known Krakow surgeons, who happened to be nearby, ran out of a nearby restaurant.
One of them was Professor Michał Pędziwiatr. According to Fakt, after providing on-site assistance, he also operated on one of the police officers at the hospital.
Pędziwiatr heads the Second Department of Surgery at Jagiellonian University and the Department of General, Oncological, Metabolic, and Emergency Surgery at the University Hospital in Krakow. As the publication notes, he received an award from the Krakow District Medical Chamber for the best result on a specialized exam, and also achieved the best result in the country on the oncological surgery exam.
The second doctor who saved the police officers on the street, according to preliminary information from Fakt, was most likely Dr. Mateusz Wierdak. He is also a well-known Krakow surgeon.
Meanwhile, Polish Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek called for blood donations for police officer Jakub Kulik. According to the minister, the officer is fighting for his life, with one of his lungs not functioning.
The officer needs AB Rh+ blood — the fourth, Rhesus-positive type. Żurek urged everyone who can help to contact blood donation centers across Poland. When donating, it is important to clearly state that the blood is intended for Jakub Kulik.
“Today he was saving people in Krakow's Main Market Square. Now let's help save him,” the minister wrote. His appeal was reposted by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland.
The 6th Airborne Brigade also called for help. Kulik previously served in it and only recently transferred from the military to the police.
Six people died during the attack in the center of Krakow. The attacker was wounded and detained.
