Fico: Referendum on Slovakia's Accession to the European Union Was Falsified
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the referendum on the country's accession to the European Union in 2003 was falsified. He said this during the opening of the "School of Social Democracy," organized by his Smer party, without, however, providing any evidence, reports "European Pravda."

Fico admitted that Slovakia's accession to the EU was accompanied by great enthusiasm and high expectations, but claimed that the voting results were allegedly altered. According to him, they were so close that certain adjustments were supposedly made to them to achieve the desired outcome and allow Slovakia to join the European Union. However, he did not provide any details or evidence to support this version.
At the time of the referendum, the Smer party was in opposition but supported the country's accession to the EU. Fico stated that without the support of the then-opposition, including Smer and its then-leader Vladimír Mečiar, the referendum would not have been successful.
The vote took place in May 2003. Turnout was 52.15%, and almost 94% of participants supported Slovakia's entry into the European Union. This referendum remains the only successful one in the country's history: other votes did not gather the necessary majority of voter support.
