Italian chef fired from Australian restaurant for refusing to make pineapple pizza
Italian chef Davide Tamburello lost his job at La Costa restaurant in Brisbane, Australia, partly due to his refusal to add pineapple to pizza. He believed that such a dish insulted Italian culture, writes the BBC.

The chef was fired in May, two weeks after a conversation with management, who had a number of complaints against him.
One of them concerned Tamburello's refusal to prepare a ham and pineapple pizza for customers. He stated that he was not obliged to follow even management's orders if, in his opinion, they insulted his culture.
Details of this story became known after the chef appealed to the Australian Fair Work Commission, claiming he had been unfairly dismissed.
In a decision published on October 3, the commission noted that the refusal to use pineapples was linked to his belief that it insulted Italian culture. Over the past four years, Tamburello had refused to put this fruit on pizza three times. Earlier, he even asked his boss to find out how important it was for Italians not to add pineapples to such a dish.
Meanwhile, the state of Queensland, where the restaurant is located, is considered the center of pineapple cultivation in Australia: all commercially grown pineapples in the country are produced here. On the Sunshine Coast, there is even a 16-meter fiberglass pineapple model, which is included in the list of cultural heritage sites.
However, the dispute over pizza was not the only reason for management's dissatisfaction. The restaurant also had complaints about the chef's use of profanity, his manner of communication, and how he expressed dissatisfaction at work.
The commission's decision also mentions an incident in April when Tamburello broke the bones in his right hand after hitting a metal railing. The chef hoped that the restaurant would help him obtain a work visa, which would allow qualified specialists to apply for permanent residency in Australia. After his dismissal, the restaurant stopped this support.
The chef lost his attempt to challenge the dismissal: the commission did not consider the case on its merits because the application was submitted late. Restaurant manager Elliott Ingram told the Daily Mail that this story was "not just about pizza ingredients."
According to Tamburello's LinkedIn profile, he now works at another restaurant in Brisbane. There are no pineapples on the menu of this establishment.
