On November 24, residents of Belarus will be able to observe a supermoon. On this day, the full Moon will be relatively close to Earth, so it will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual. This will be the first of three consecutive supermoons: the next ones are expected in December and January. NASA reported this.

According to the astronomical service Time and Date, on November 24, the Moon will rise in Minsk at approximately 16:07, even before sunset. After 17:00, when it starts to get dark, it will be visible above the eastern part of the horizon. For this, it is best to choose a place where tall buildings and trees do not obstruct the view.
Astronomical full moon will occur at approximately 17:53 Minsk time. This is not the time of moonrise nor the moment when it appears largest. It refers to the exact phase when the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. However, to the human eye, the Moon will also appear almost full on November 23 and 25.
The reason for the supermoon is related to the peculiarities of the lunar orbit. It has an elongated shape, so the distance between the Moon and Earth constantly changes. When a full moon coincides with the satellite approaching our planet, a phenomenon called a supermoon occurs.
As NASA explains, in extreme cases, a full moon can appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than during a full moon when it is at its greatest distance from Earth. However, this is the maximum difference, not the exact figures for the November supermoon.
There is also an interesting optical effect: when the Moon appears above the horizon, next to trees and buildings, it seems particularly large. In fact, this is an illusion of human perception, which also occurs during a normal full moon. Therefore, it is better to observe the supermoon in the evening, while it is still low above the horizon. No special equipment will be needed for this.
The November full moon is traditionally called the Beaver Moon. The name comes from North American traditions: in late autumn, beavers actively prepare for winter, strengthening dams and storing food. In some sources, the November Moon is also called the Frost Moon.
The next supermoon is expected on December 24. After this, the Moon will again be relatively close to Earth during the January full moon. All three phenomena will be visible to the naked eye, weather permitting.
