EU not swayed by Trump's proposal to resume Russian gas purchases via US

The European Union does not plan to resume purchases of Russian gas via the United States, despite proposals being discussed as part of the American approach to a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war. Several European diplomats told EUobserver this .

One EU representative emphasized that the European Union is fundamentally committed to reducing its dependence on Russian fossil fuels. Another diplomat stated that there are currently no grounds to ease sanctions and restrictions against Russia. On the contrary, given Russia's strikes on the Ukrainian population and infrastructure, Europe considers it necessary to intensify pressure on Moscow.

In October, Ukraine's Western partners held two meetings dedicated to its post-war reconstruction and security guarantees. A third meeting is taking place in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday. It is attended by representatives of Ukraine, national security advisors from France, Germany, the UK, and the US, as well as high-ranking representatives from the European Commission, NATO, and the World Bank.

According to one diplomat, the issue of resuming Russian gas purchases was not raised during two briefings on the results of negotiations with the Americans.

Meanwhile, the American approach to a peaceful settlement envisions not only security guarantees but also economic benefits for Ukraine and Russia. At a meeting in early October in Miami between the Ukrainian delegation and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, the possibility of economic reintegration of Russia, Ukraine, and Europe through an agreement in the energy sector was discussed.

One element of such an agreement could be a pipeline for delivering Russian oil and gas to Europe via Ukraine, mediated by the United States. Profits from transit and the sale of energy resources were proposed to be shared between Moscow and Kyiv.

However, European diplomats emphasize that the EU currently has no plans to return to purchasing Russian gas. The issue was also not discussed during the negotiations in Brussels.
