Russia to Build Another Nuclear Power Plant Near Belarusian Border
Another nuclear power plant, Smolensk NPP-2, is planned to be built near the border with Belarus. It will be located in Russia's Smolensk region, Interfax reports .

Rostekhnadzor has confirmed Rosatom's readiness to build two new power units for Smolensk NPP-2. This was reported by the communications department of the nuclear power plant.
The commission of the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological, and Nuclear Supervision of Russia checked the documents required to obtain licenses for the construction of the first and second power units. Experts studied safety justifications, quality assurance programs, results of engineering surveys, issues of personnel training, organization of construction control, and interaction with contractors.
In addition, the commission visited the construction site, where it familiarized itself with the preparatory work. The inspection found no inaccurate information in the submitted documentation. According to Rostekhnadzor's conclusions, there are no obstacles to issuing licenses for the construction of the two power units.
Smolensk NPP-2, with two VVER-optim type reactors, is included in Russia's general scheme for the placement of electric power facilities until 2042. The total installed capacity of the plant will be 2.4 GW. Its construction is intended to gradually replace the operational power units of Smolensk NPP as their service life expires.
At the current stage, buildings for the rebar shop, the client, and the general contractor, as well as a canteen, are being erected at the construction base. Roads and utility networks are being laid, foundations for concrete facilities and other objects are being established, and electrical grid infrastructure is being created.
The next stage should be obtaining the conclusion of the Main State Expertise on the design documentation for the main construction period of both power units. This is expected by December 15, 2026.
