President of Israel to task Gadi Eisenkot with forming a government
Israeli President Isaac Herzog intends to task opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot with forming a new government. This was reported by the presidential office.

Eisenkot will receive the official mandate on Sunday at 5 PM local time. After that, he will have 28 days to form a government coalition.
On November 7, current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the creation of a government of national unity. He stated that this was necessary to prevent parties representing the country's Arab population from participating in the government.
In the parliamentary elections held on October 27, none of the political blocs received the majority of mandates necessary to form a government. Netanyahu's political force formed the largest faction in parliament, while Eisenkot's opposition alliance took second place.
However, the president's decision does not yet mean that Eisenkot will necessarily become the new prime minister. He had previously stated that he does not intend to unite with Arab parties. However, during talks with the president, representatives of these parties expressed their readiness to support his candidacy.
