Lukashenka: “We Learned How to Make Elections a Holiday”

‘Parliamentary elections’ scheduled for September 23

Elections as a holiday

“We learned how to make the elections a holiday for Belarusian people. Let us organize a holiday one more time. This day must be a holiday,” said Aliaksandr Lukashenka at the parliamentary elections preparatory meeting held by Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

“Any unlawful activity, political provocations aimed at destabilization of the situation in the country must be stopped without delay and the guilty persons must be punished according to the law," said Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Translating this into ‘simple’ language, Lukashenka stated that political competition will be allowed only within the frameworks set by Lukashenka.

All the winners of the previous elections were pro-Lukashenka candidates.

No protests and only “reliable people”

Aliaksandr Lukashenka explained: street protest actions will not be allowed and elections committees will embrace only “reliable people.”

“The task of the law enforcement agencies is not to let the pre-elections meetings to transform into such [street] actions,” stressed Lukashenka.

“The representatives of the parties with good reputation from previous election campaigns must become the members of the electoral committees.

“Those, who assisted the disorganization of the elections before, should not be given a second chance,” stressed Lukashenka.

“We should not adjust to anyone”

Belarusians are to elect its Parliament on September 23. This date was scheduled by the President and announced on June 18 during the meeting on parliamentary election organization in Minsk.

Previously, on June 8, Lukashenka stated — during the meeting with the chief of the Belarusian Election Committee — that «this year we should not adjust to anyone."

«You have already seen during our previous elections that no one will thank us for this. And we don’t need this ‘gratitude.’ We have to consider our Constitution and law. We hold the parliamentary elections — just like any other elections — for ourselves, for our country. The people must choose the deputies through fair competition," said Lukashenka.

After this, Lidzija Jarmoshyna — the Chief of the Belarusian Election Committee — said that election code will not be altered as it is, on the on hand, too late to do this in 2012 and on the other hand Belarus will follow the OSCE recommendations which say that the alterations should be done max. a year before the elections.
