Pakistan launched airstrikes on Taliban military targets in Kabul, as well as in Kandahar and Paktia provinces, Pakistani TV channel PTV reported, citing authorities. It reported that 72 Afghan servicemen were killed and another 120 were wounded in the attack.
Afghanistan reports the death of 55 Pakistani soldiers as a result of an operation on the border on Thursday evening.
Local TV channel TOLOnews reports that another 11 servicemen were wounded and 19 checkpoints were captured.
Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that after the withdrawal of NATO troops, it was expected that peace would be established in Afghanistan and that the Taliban would focus its attention on the interests of the Afghan people and regional stability.
"However, the Taliban has turned Afghanistan into a colony of India. They have gathered terrorists from all over the world in Afghanistan and started exporting terrorism. They have deprived their own people of basic human rights. They have taken away from women the rights that Islam gives them," he declared.
He said that Pakistan had made every effort — both directly and through friendly countries — to maintain stability, but the Taliban had become puppets of India.
"In the past, Pakistan's role was positive. It hosted five million Afghans for 50 years. Even today, hundreds of thousands of Afghans earn their living on our soil. Our patience has reached its limit. Now it is an open confrontation. Decisive measures will now be taken. The Pakistan Army did not come from overseas – we are your neighbors and we know your reality well," Asif stated.
Yesterday, Afghanistan began a military operation against Pakistan. Pakistani checkpoints were attacked, and allegedly 15 positions have already been taken under control without losses from the Afghan side.
Kabul claims this is a response to the airstrikes Pakistan carried out overnight on Sunday on the Afghan provinces of Nangarhar and Paktika. Islamabad explained the airstrikes as a response to a series of suicide bombings in Pakistan. Pakistani authorities accuse the Taliban of not preventing militants from crossing the border and operating on Pakistani territory. The Afghan side rejects these accusations.
