Jahor Viniacki, a campaign aide to an opposition parliamentary candidate in Minsk, was arrested by police on Wednesday afternoon and sentenced to 10 days in jail on a charge of using obscene language in a public place.
Police officers came to the home of Mr. Viniacki, an activist of Zmiena, at 1:30 p.m., allegedly to carry out a search.
“I don't know whether or not the officers produced a search warrant,” Mr. Vinahradau said. ”They seized printed materials from the apartment and probably took him to a police station.”
Mr. Vinahradau linked the arrest to the young man's involvement in a campaign for boycotting the forthcoming House of Representatives elections. The campaign is being conducted in Frunzienskaja Electoral District No. 101 in Minsk by the “Tell the Truth!” movement, the Movement for Freedom and the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF). Mr. Viniacki is a campaign aide to BPF candidate Arciom Liava, who plans to withdraw from the race before the early voting period.
