Belarusian scientists recreated the appearance of a miner who lived 4.5 thousand years ago
Belarusian scientists have reconstructed the appearance of a miner who lived on the territory of modern Belarus about 4.5 thousand years ago. This work became part of a large-scale research project "Population of Belarus. Album in Faces — A Look into the Past", the presentation of which took place in Minsk, writes BelTA.

The publication was prepared by specialists from the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus together with scientists from the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The book is dedicated to the anthropological study of the population of Belarusian lands and contains extensive scientific and illustrative material.
According to Vadim Lakiza, director of the Institute of History, archaeological findings, primarily burial complexes, formed the basis of the research. Skeletal remains and skulls allow, with the help of modern methods, to reconstruct how people looked from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages and early Modern Age. The book presents reconstructed images of 26 individuals from 23 archaeological sites across the country.
One of the most unique examples was an ancient miner from the Krasnoselsky flint mines in the present-day Vawkavysk district. A sculptural bust of him already existed, but now, thanks to new scientific data, his appearance has been clarified and supplemented. This image is planned to be used in the museification of the archaeological complex.
In addition, scientists have recreated the appearance of inhabitants from various regions and eras: a peasant from Polesie, a woman from a settlement on the Menka River, inhabitants of the upper reaches of the Berezina, as well as a woman from a medieval village in the Dzyatlava district. A 13th-14th century burial ground with well-preserved skeletal remains was found there.

Research was also conducted at the Christian cemetery in Byalynichy, which operated from the late 16th to the 19th century. As a result, it was possible to reconstruct not only the appearance of men and women, but also the approximate look of their clothing. Images of people who once lived in Nesvizh were also reconstructed.
The project combined archaeology, anthropology, genetics, radiocarbon dating, digital technologies and elements of artificial intelligence, as well as the work of artists and sculptors. Preparations are already underway for a reprint of the book and the creation of separate popular science publications dedicated to the population of various regions of Belarus.
