The 2022 Olympic relay champion, seven-time world champion, Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid apologized to his ex-girlfriend for statements regarding infidelity after the 20 km individual race at the 2026 Olympic Games in Italy.
"I apologize to my ex-girlfriend, who unwittingly found herself in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well. I cannot fix this, but now I will put all this behind me to focus on the Olympic Games. I will not answer any further questions on this matter," VG quoted Lægreid as saying.
On Tuesday, after his bronze finish in the individual race, Sturla publicly admitted to cheating on his girlfriend.
"Half a year ago I met the love of my life — the most beautiful and kindest girl in the world, and three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life — I cheated on her.
This has been the worst week of my life. Perhaps many will look at me differently now, but I only think about her. I don't quite understand what I want to say right now, but sport has taken a backseat in recent days. And it's a shame that I can't share this with her. I try to be a good role model, but I did something foolish.
I have nothing to lose. I had a chance at true love, and I ruined everything.
You don't have to forgive me. But if there's even the slightest chance to tell her how much I love her, even if it kills me in the media live on air, I'm ready — just to get that tiny chance," said the 28-year-old athlete after the race.
Today at the Olympics, the 10 km biathlon sprint will take place.
