Today in Switzerland, in Zurich and Fribourg, the Ice Hockey World Championship in the Elite Division begins. It follows the usual format: 16 national teams are divided into two groups of 8 teams each.
Four teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, while the teams that finish last in their groups will be relegated from the top division.
In Group A play: Switzerland, USA, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Great Britain, Hungary, Austria.
In Group B — Canada, Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Slovenia.
The championship starts today with the Canada — Sweden match (17:20).
A year ago, the championship was won by the USA national team, which defeated Switzerland 1:0 in overtime in the final. The USA also won the Winter Olympics.
The Belarusian national team last participated in the World Championship in 2021, when it finished last in its group.
That tournament was supposed to take place in two countries: Belarus and Latvia, but as a result of the reaction to political repressions in our country, the championship was entirely moved to Latvia.
And since 2022, Belarusian and Russian hockey have been excluded from international competitions.
