Belarusian and Chinese surgeons performed a successful remote operation to remove part of the liver. The patient was in China, approximately six thousand kilometers from the doctors who managed the process from Minsk.

The operation was performed from the operating room of the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology. The patient himself was in a hospital in China at that time.
The surgical team in Minsk was led by the head of the center, Oleg Rumo, and Chinese professor Li Zheyong. During the intervention, the Medbot robotic complex, which is used in modern oncological and surgical practice, was utilized.
Belarusian specialists had previously undergone internships in China to learn how to work with such technology.
According to Oleg Rumo, this was the first step in the development of online surgery in Belarus. Reliable communication and technologies that allowed data to be transmitted in real-time played an important role in the operation.
In the future, similar operations are planned to be conducted within the country: surgeons will work from Minsk, while patients will be in regional hospitals where appropriate robotic systems will be installed.
