General Dan Cane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, will arrive in Warsaw next week to discuss the decision to abandon the deployment of an American armored brigade to Poland, RMF 24 reports.
General Cane's visit to Warsaw is scheduled for Wednesday and is generating great interest in Poland. His arrival comes at a time when military relations between Warsaw and Washington are in the spotlight following the sudden announcement by the US of its refusal to send four thousand troops to Poland.
US Army Commander General Christopher LaNeve emphasized that, given the instructions he received, canceling the deployment of the armored brigade to Poland "was the most reasonable option."
This information raised numerous questions regarding the future presence of American troops in Poland and the security of the entire Central and Eastern European region.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has scheduled a meeting with General Cane, during which further steps and possibilities for military cooperation are to be discussed.
Simultaneously, starting Monday, Deputy Ministers of Defense – Cezary Tomczyk and Paweł Zalewski – will be in the United States. Their task will be to conduct international negotiations and present Poland's position on this matter.
As a result of the agreements, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also join these efforts, undertaking its own diplomatic initiatives.
LaNeve stated in the US House of Representatives that he did not know if Poland had been informed about the suspension of the planned deployment of the armored brigade. He also could not answer whether there were plans to replace the brigade in Poland.
Politico reported that Pentagon officials were surprised by this decision.
