Belarusian doctors for the first time saved an infant without half a diaphragm
In Belarus, an infant with an extremely rare developmental defect — the absence of half a diaphragm — was saved. Doctors also corrected a congenital heart defect. This was reported by the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Surgery, writes BelTA.

Such a defect is considered incompatible with life: usually, children die within the first hours after birth. To stabilize the infant's condition, doctors connected him to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which temporarily performed the functions of the heart and lungs.
A few days later, the child underwent a unique operation: the diaphragm was reconstructed using his own muscles. A week later, surgeons performed a second operation — on the heart.
The center noted that this is the first case in Belarus where a child with such a rare and severe defect survived. Even in the largest world medical centers, with highly qualified specialists and necessary equipment, the survival rate for similar pathology does not exceed 5-6%. Moreover, this refers to cases where the infant does not have an additional heart defect.
Comprehensive treatment was carried out by a multidisciplinary team, which included resuscitators, extracorporeal circulation specialists, pediatric surgeons, and cardiac surgeons.
As a result, the infant was successfully transitioned to independent breathing. He is now being prepared for discharge.
