Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu. My native land suddenly became hateful to me

The writer and former presidential candidate published a poignant post on his Facebook page, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Ancestors — Dzyady.

Dzyady. Today, they are not just a folk tradition, a day of remembrance for ancestors. Today, they are that eternal essence that still remains of the true Belarus, whose contours are increasingly illusory.

I do not believe that Belarus will cease to exist. Because I know that it will be. Even if it loses, as it has lost before, its borders, or loses the hallmarks of statehood, it will exist within itself. And it will find its borders again, like a snake its new skin.

Genetically, it is a very strong entity. That is precisely why, no matter how much they try to destroy it, they cannot.

What is happening to us now was unimaginable until recently. Not long ago, when my older friends passed away – Karatkevich, Straltsou, Bykau, Baradulin, Buraukin, Vyartsinsky – how I regretted it!

“How untimely,” I desperately thought over their graves, “how untimely!” But now I think it’s timely… And I even envy them: they do not see what is unbearable to see…

But one must endure. And to endure – remember. Do not forget that they were, they plowed, they sowed, they wrote – and you owe them. And you simply must do what you do best. Because, as in antiquity, so in the future, only in its best form is it indestructible – our Belarus.

My native corner suddenly became hateful to me.
And I would forget that I was born here,
If God gave me strength to forget, to unlove
That hill where my ancestors' graves lie,
Where soon I too will face God's judgment.

I know that at that judgment
I will say that I betrayed no one, nowhere,
That I am innocent of blood…
But God will ask: “Did you not sell your brother?
Did you not abandon your sister in distress?”

I would answer, no!.. If He had given me strength
To overcome the horror that rose over me,
The hatred that, like dust, sweeps love from the earth!…
He knows that I did not sell.
I know why He will ask that.

Хведар, "У края большой дороги многих прохожих ноги в грязь затоптали кусок яшмы, жизнь её долго пытала, но яшма грязью не стала".
