Lukashenka: At negotiations with Americans and Europeans, I say: "I am ready to turn the page"

Lukashenka suggests the West "turn the page," but he puts his own meaning into it: Europeans and Americans must admit their defeat in the 2020 confrontation and establish relations with him. He does not propose changes to his own policy.

Speaking at the IV Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, Alexander Lukashenka mentioned the protests currently taking place in European countries. But he notes that he does not rejoice in them: "We behave cautiously here, we do not rejoice. And I tell many of my journalists: there is no need to rejoice in this."

According to him, with the dominance of the internet, protests can quickly spread to neighboring states: "Therefore, we should not rejoice. We need to observe, draw conclusions, learn lessons so that this does not happen to us."

Lukashenka believes that similar events occurred in Belarus in 2020.

He justifies the suppression of protests by an allegedly averted war: if the protests had not been suppressed, the war would have started not in Ukraine, but in Belarus.

"We experienced this in Belarus in the twentieth year. The Ukrainian fight would have started with us. If we hadn't held out here, war would have been here. Here. But here they lost. They don't want to admit it, although at negotiations with Americans and many Europeans I say: 'Guys, I am ready to turn the page. But you lost. You must at least admit to yourselves, not publicly: you lost. Let's establish relations.'"

He called for an end to confrontation. Because, moreover, Western instruments against the regime — sanctions — are not working.

"Sanctions... So what about these sanctions? What? This is the sixth year, six years of these sanctions — have we, along with Russia, collapsed? No. The world is big. And those who imposed sanctions, today somehow or other trade with Russia," he states.

Lukashenka called it an illusion that one can "remake someone," and called for agreements on the principles of "coexistence."

"It is time to understand the undeniable, irrefutable truth: security and economy are two sides of the same coin. They cannot exist without each other. It's time to stop indulging in illusions that one can remake someone. We need to agree on the principles of coexistence and open the way to good-neighborliness," he argues.
