Denmark wants to ban 'turbo chicken' breeding. They gain two kilograms in just 33 days
The Danish government plans to ban the national breeding of fast-growing Ross 308 chickens, known as 'turbo chickens,' and also intends to seek a similar ban across the European Union. Politico reports this, citing Minister for Animal Welfare Christian Rabjerg Madsen.
According to the Danish minister, problems with the living conditions of such birds are widespread, as they grow faster than their bodies' capabilities allow. Ross 308 chickens can reach a weight of about two kilograms in just 33 days. Such growth rates can lead to injuries and mobility problems.
The minister's statement came the day after a documentary filmed with a hidden camera on a poultry farm was shown. The footage showed that chickens were illegally provided with only three hours of darkness per day to accelerate their growth.
According to the publication, the initiative is supported by a wide range of political parties. However, Madsen admitted that legal and financial issues still need to be resolved.
Representatives of the poultry industry warn that a ban could lead to increased meat imports, and Danish farmers would find it harder to compete with foreign producers. The company Danpo told the industry publication LandbrugsAvisen that it is ready to abandon fast-growing breeds if restrictions also apply to imports.
Denmark had previously attempted to achieve a ban on such chickens at the EU level, but a previous attempt to introduce restrictions within the country itself was unsuccessful. In September, the Dutch government proposed a similar national ban. This initiative is currently being considered by the country's parliament.
The European Commission plans to introduce new rules for the welfare of chickens later this year, but has not yet announced an intention to ban specific breeds.
