New Highways and a Bridge Across Drozdy. What the Road Network in Northern Minsk Will Look Like

A quick glance at the map of Minsk is enough to notice a certain imbalance in the density of the road network within the Minsk Ring Road (MKAD). The northern part of the capital, between two reservoirs — Tsnyanskoye and Drozdy — is clearly underdeveloped. But the situation is already changing: the "Northern Shore" quarters are being built up, new streets are being constructed, and existing ones are being reconstructed. Actual plans were shared with Onlíner by the "Minskzhilproekt" design institute, as well as by "Riverside Development Limited," the developer of "Northern Shore."

Orlovskaya — Karastayanava — Langbarda — MKAD

Let's start from the western shore of the Tsnyanskoye reservoir and the "Northern Shore" quarters being built there, and move west, towards Drozdy, that is, counter-clockwise.

“Minskzhilproekt” is engaged in the development of construction projects for engineering and transport infrastructure, and currently, the planning of quarters up to the eighth can be considered in its final stage. It is clear that where residential buildings are erected, a system of new road arteries and transport links is formed.

The capital is developing according to a radial-ring scheme, which is also being implemented in the north. And one of the new "rays" will soon extend from the Second Ring Road to the MKAD. The route will pass along Lilija Karastayanava and Iosif Langbard streets.

On Lilija Karastayanava Street, construction work is currently active, the carriageway is being widened on the section from Nyakrasava Street to Arlouskaya Street, with further development towards Kulman Street. The task is to ensure direct passage here this year, as specialists say. In the area of the intersection with Arlouskaya Street, the work is linked to the design of the fourth metro line, so the area awaits major changes.

Work is also underway to relocate the "Karastayanava" dispatch station to the "Kulman" dispatch station.

In the future, Lilija Karastayanava Street will be connected to Iosif Langbard Street, movement on a separate section of which was opened last year. Currently, Iosif Langbard Street is open on the section from the inner ring of the MKAD to Pavel Maslenikov Street. From there to Lilija Karastayanava Street is less than two kilometers, the connection should appear in the area of Nyakrasava Street.

As a result, a new direct route will appear from the Second Ring Road to "Northern Shore" and the MKAD.

By the way, within the project, a territory for the development of high-speed public transport is provided along this route. Whether electric buses or, possibly, high-speed trams will operate on the line remains to be seen. A contact network for a tram was not envisaged at this stage, but for now, we will not rule out any options.

Also in the project is an exit from Iosif Langbard Street to the outer ring of the MKAD. Everyone who drove along the ring road in this area saw that the road is already laid, the embankment is there — it remains to build an overpass to the outer side.

Arlouskaya — Smarhounski Trakt — Palina Miadzyolka — MKAD

Another "ray" that, according to plans, will connect the Second Transport Ring and the MKAD, and which can be noticed on the project schemes, will pass through Smarhounski Trakt and Palina Miadzyolka Street. This will not be as wide a route compared to Karastayanava — Langbarda, but as an alternative, as a duplicate, it will play its role in distributing traffic flows.

However, it is too early to talk about the prospects of its creation: this is clearly not a priority task for builders.

Solving the Problem of Dalhinava Trakt

But the role of Dalhinava Trakt in the development of the northern part of the city, one might say, is crucial. Currently, another stage of construction work is ongoing there. It can be considered that the tract is ready up to Charviakova Lane, but further, in the direction of Arlouskaya Street, that is, the Second Transport Ring, there is still much work to be done.

The plan is clearly formulated: Dalhinava Trakt will have six lanes of traffic throughout its entire length. But private development stands in the way. "Minskzhilproekt" reported that there are plans for demolition after settling property rights issues with citizens. At the same time, beyond Charviakova Lane, the main route will change direction, effectively turning onto Staravilienski Trakt.

After the area is cleared, the tract will be widened, and the old "bottleneck" problem before the exit to Arlouskaya will be solved.

Along Navavilenskaya to the MKAD

Finally, another "ray" that will connect the Second Ring Road and the MKAD in the northern part of the city, between the Tsnyanskoye Reservoir and Drozdy, is Navavilenskaya Street after its planned reconstruction. It envisages the construction of a six-lane highway and a transport interchange with the ring road. According to available information, the design of this route is ongoing, and the start of construction of the interchange on the MKAD is scheduled for 2027.

Third Ring Road

We've dealt with the so-called "rays," now let's move on to the rings.

The continuation of Shyrokaya Street, which leads from Lahoyski Trakt, should become the new Projectnaya Street.

— The project exists, construction will be carried out in two stages. It is necessary to transfer the 110 kV high-voltage line, which is currently overhead, into a cable. In parallel, the street will be built, — say specialists at "Minskzhilproekt."

Converting to cable, simply put, means moving the high-voltage line underground. There are many specifics and limitations, but for us, it's enough to understand that the wires currently strung between poles in the air will be transferred to underground cable networks.

This new street will connect all the routes described above, and at the intersections, in three out of four cases, roundabouts will appear. In essence, this is the development of the Third Transport Ring: the arc, which leads virtually from Sierabranka, will finally get an extension and will eventually close.

— Regarding the Third Transport Ring: currently, the overpass on Kalesnikava Street is under construction, a project to connect Churlyonisa and Landera streets is also being developed, and at the pre-design stage is the connection of Syarova with Shpileuskaha and Manyushka with Malinava, — say the institute's specialists.

By the way, another project is an overpass that will connect Svislackaya Street with Syalickaha Street. This is a duplicate route for Partyzanski Avenue.

Bridge across Drozdy?

Let's return to the north of the city. As residential quarters are built up, the demand for new communication routes will grow. Preparation for connections with the MKAD and the Second Ring Road is already evident, and the continuation of Shyrokaya Street will link these areas with the northwestern part of the city, providing access to Lahoyski Trakt and Kalinovskaha Street.

One question remains: will there be a direct route to the west, to Peramozhtsao Avenue?

There is a plan according to which the continuation of Shyrokaya Street — Projectnaya Street — will extend to Drozdy Park and, making an arc, will lead to Peramozhtsao Avenue opposite Viasyolkavaya Street, which adjoins it.

Finally, the most ambitious project is a bridge across the Drozdy reservoir. Specialists acknowledge that such a route is justified, but exactly how and when it can be implemented is yet to be predicted.

Map of the Area

Let's summarize. This is a scheme for classifying the street-road network in the northern part of the city between the Tsnyanskoye Reservoir and Drozdy. Uninhabited territories will change dramatically in the future. And work is already underway.

— There are no particular problems, — note specialists at "Minskzhilproekt." — What is a swamp to us, for example? We know what to do with it. There are specifics related to the demolition of housing, rerouting huge water pipelines, high-voltage lines, but the terrain and soils do not pose difficulties.

— Where is it easier to work: build from scratch in a clear field or rework what was once created?

— Of course, it's easier to build from scratch. Even if you look at the plan of existing networks in this area: there can be dozens of them on one square meter. And all of this needs to be rerouted; one cable pipe can contain 10-15 cables, and there can be 24 or even 48 such channels. And each cable needs to be agreed upon with the operating organization, with the owner, and everything reconnected anew.

— Winter is coming. Will this affect the progress of work?

— Earthwork is carried out in winter, pipes and networks are laid. Only asphalt is not laid in winter. Of course, landscaping is not done. But supports can be installed, concreting can also be done — there are technologies, everything has been perfected. In general, we are working, — the specialists concluded.
