The project, which started back in 2019, proved so successful that its scope is only expanding.

In Bavarian cities, pickle brine is used to combat ice. The pilot project was launched back in 2019 and proved beneficial for everyone — in the first years, there was enough brine to treat approximately 1500 km of roads, saving about 700 kg of road salt, writes DW.
A pickled vegetable production plant near Munich became the supplier for local utilities. During preservation, cucumbers are immersed in brine for a certain time — after which it is disposed of. The plant wondered how pickle brine could be reused.
Joint tests with the Bavarian Ministry of Transport showed that the brine effectively combats ice when the salt concentration is increased.
Currently, 1000 tons of brine yield about 1100 tons of de-icing agent. It works at temperatures down to -18°C.
In 2024, Munich Airport also joined the project. Brine is used to treat aprons and walkways near the airfield. It cannot be used for runways because salt cannot come into contact with aircraft and equipment.
