Two Japanese cranes live in the zoo — female Julia and male Richard.

Both birds arrived at the zoo as part of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums' program 'Conservation of Eurasian Cranes'
Julia was the first to arrive in Grodno in 2024. A year later, Richard appeared there. Initially, the birds lived in different enclosures: they were too young to form a pair.
In the autumn of 2025, the female was moved to an enclosure next to Richard's. The birds had the opportunity to get acquainted, to see each other, but it was still too early to unite them, specialists believed.
And only after almost six months of observing the birds did ornithologists come to the conclusion: Richard and Julia are ready to form a pair.
Staff from the 'Birds' department are waiting for warmer weather so that deep snow does not introduce unplanned adjustments to this long-awaited event.
