Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Ukraine's accession to the European Union requires a realistic assessment of the readiness of both Kyiv and the bloc itself, and expressed doubt about fixing 2027 as the accession date. Radosław Sikorski made this statement after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, writes "Polskie Radio".
"I always appreciate creative thinking. The very fact of Ukraine's accession will be a great challenge for both Ukraine itself and the European Union, because it is a large country, but not very wealthy. At the same time, we remember that Ukraine has not yet fully implemented the Association Agreement. So creative thinking is one thing, and political decisions are another," the minister said.
There is talk about Kyiv's efforts to fix 2027 as the date of EU accession in a future peace agreement. The proponent of the so-called "reverse membership" for Ukraine is the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
This concept implies that Ukraine first becomes a full member of the EU, and only then, in the process of implementing reforms, joins specific cooperation programs.
This includes, among other things, cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. Sikorski emphasized that such an approach poses a serious procedural challenge.
