US President Donald Trump told his aides that he is ready to halt the military campaign against Iran, even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to shipping, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing administration officials.
In recent days, Trump and his aides concluded that an attempt to force Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz could prolong the conflict beyond Trump's defined 4-6 week plan.
Washington aims to achieve its main goals — weakening the Iranian navy, destroying missile stockpiles, after which it will conclude hostilities and seek to open the Strait of Hormuz from Tehran through diplomatic means. In the event of a diplomatic failure, the US will pressure Europe and Gulf countries to lead efforts to open the strait.
Newspaper sources also state that Trump may consider military options, but they are not his immediate priority.
